Herbal Tea Safety
Introduction
Burgrune's Herbal Teas list all the ingredients on the tin. Your tea won't contain an ingredient that isn't clearly stated on the label.
We select herbal ingredients thar are generally well tolerated by healthy adults. However, in very rare cases, minor adverse effects can occur, including:
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Headache and fatigue
- Heart palpitations or insomnia
If any of these effects occur, stop consuming the tea immediately.
What you won't find in our herbal teas:
Risky herbs, such as:
- Pennyroyal
- Comfrey
- St. John's Wort
- Kava
- Chaparral
- Blue Lotus Flower
- Cannabinoids
You also won't find banned and restricted herbs, including those associated with witchcraft and magic, for example:
Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade), Aconite, Hellebore, Henbane and Mandrake.
Neither do we use herbs which require a clinical licence to prescribe.

Please note, that low to moderate intake is not expected to have a significant effect on most people. However, we want you to be informed about the risks of consuming our herbal teas so you can make sensible decisions regarding your own health and safety.
Bitter orange (Citrus × aurantium) (in Quickening Tea, Hearthgold Tea)
Known contraindications:
- Stimulants
- Decongestants
- Sexual Dysfunction Medication
- Certain chemotherapies
- Statins
- Anti-anxiety medications
- Diabetes medications
- All blood thinners, including warfarin, asprin, clopidogrel
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) (in Warm Contentment Tea, Faerie Charm, Renewal Tea, Moon Spell, Hot & Bothered Brew)
Known contraindications:
- All blood thinners
- Oestrogen (Tamoxifen)
- Sedatives
- Upcoming surgeries: stop taking chamomile at least two weeks before scheduled surgery
Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale) (Manifestation Tea, Root Balm Digestive)
Known contraindications:
- Warfarin
Ginkgo Leaf (Ginkgo biloba) (in Light of the Sun Tea)
Known contraindications:
- Warfarin, all blood thinners, including aspirin.
- Diabetes medication
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Hawthorn (Crataegus) (in Awen Tea, Faerie Charm Tea, Hot & Bothered Brew, Awaken Love Tea, Hedgerow Tea)
Known contraindications:
- All heart and blood pressure medication, including: digoxin, blood pressure reducers, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, nitrates
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
- All sexual dysfunction medications
- Upcoming surgeries: stop taking hawthorn at least two weeks before scheduled surgery
Liquorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) (in Root Balm Digestif)
Known contraindications:
- All blood pressure medication, blood thinners, heart medication
- Antiinflammatories (NSAID)
- Oestrogen & Birth Control
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) (in Prophetic Dream Tea)
Known contraindications:
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
- All blood thinners
- Seizure medication
- Sedatives
Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) (in Sleeping Draught, Sacred Serenity, Hedgerow Tea)
Known contraindications:
- Sedative and sleep medications
- Muscle relaxants
- Anti-histamines
- Opioid and prescription painkillers
- Anti-depressants
- Upcoming surgeries: stop taking valerian root at least two weeks before scheduled surgery
